The Opportunities for Playoff Spots Closing Up

If there were two common themes that were learned during Week 16 of the National Women’s Soccer League, they would go along the lines of that no lead is safe, regardless if that lead is on the field or in the standings, and waiting out a storm could help you in the long run. As the NWSL heads towards a frantic final three weeks of the regular season, playoff positions are still being fought for. For the teams that are on the outside looking in, they aren’t throwing in the towel just yet which will make the next few weeks very exciting. Let’s take a look back at the five games from Week 16 of the regular season: Read more

Distance Control For the Top Four

Week 15 of the NWSL regular season truly begins the business end of the season. With only four weeks left before the playoffs after this weekend of action, each team had one game to dictate how the end of the season would finish out. And the result of the four matches this weekend gave some separation between the top and the bottom four teams. Lets take a look at what happened this past weekend in the NWSL as well as what teams will need to do to stay or crack into the top four of the league table. Read more

Goalkeepers Union Special Edition

Week 14 of the National Women’s Soccer League was highlighted by the league’s first televised match on Fox Soccer Channel. But before we get to that bit, in a couple of matches we saw some of the best goalkeeping exhibitions in this young season. As a former goalkeeper, the union between the crazy people that stand in between the posts is a strong one. And keepers take pride in their ability to dictate the outcome of a match on their performances. So let’s first take a look at the goalkeepers who shined this week: Read more

Things Are Tightening Up

It was a hot one in Week 13 of the NWSL Regular Season. Temperatures soared into the 90s, even the low triple digits throughout the week and it seemed that the weather did put a damper on some of the more critical matches. The result of the heat gave fans some sluggish matches, with players fighting not only their opposition but the elements for crucial points. At the end of the day, it proved for some great drama as some teams that almost looked to be out of playoff contention a week ago just put themselves back in the picture. There were some late heroics that helped the top of the table side through to a much needed three points. Plus, there was an announcement of sorts that many may have missed this weekend, but it seems that a top foreign international will be heading the NWSL way for the 2014 season. With all of that, lets look back at Week 13: Read more

The Forecast Calls for Reign

Yes, I’ve been waiting on using that weather pun for the Seattle Reign for quite awhile now. And with the former only win-less club in the NWSL picking up two victories during the week, things are looking up for Laura Harvey’s club. In a jam-packed week of fixtures, we also saw one of the more pesky teams in the league, currently boasting the most in-form player in the NWSL of recent times, play both of the NWSL leaders with only three days of rest in between matches. The league’s bottom dwellers Washington Spirit had to make a change, and there was a trade that many didn’t see coming and had my head shaking when the announcement was made. So with that being said, lets look back at Week 12 of the NWSL regular season: Read more
