Wolfsburg also wins the DFB Cup Competition
by Olaf Goldbecker
One week after VfL Wolfsburg celebrated their first women’s soccer title they simply continued with the celebrations after winning the national cup final. Turbine Potsdam was the opponent in the final, which was played in Cologne in front of 14,269 in the attendance. The first half did not deliver too much entertainment. Yuki Ogimi with a header to the post had the best attempt for Potsdam, but when everybody was expecting the half time whistle Wolfsburg took the lead by Martina Müller. After the break Wolfsburg started with lots of energy, Müller (52) and Conny Pohlers (55) quickly increased for a 3-0 lead – the decision? No! Lisa Evans got Potsdam on the scoreboard (59) and Yuki Ogimi (62) converted a penalty kick to get her team back within one goal range.
Now Potsdam pressured for the equalizer and a classy final developed as Turbine created chances while on the other end Wolfsburg had numerous counter attacks but failed to care for the decision. At least five sitters were missed in the final quarter hour. Five minutes prior to the end Potsdam had the best chance to tie the match on a shot by Ada Hegerberg but the post rescued Wolfsburg for the second time of the match. 3-2 was the final score and on Thursday Wolfsburg has the chance to complete the title hat trick in the Champions League final against Olympique Lyonnais.
