Wayne Rooney: 'World Cup help put women's football on the map
Manchester United is in the midst of the Herbalife World Football Challenge in the states. Following United's 4-1 win over the New England Revolution, star forward Wayne Rooney stopped to talk exclusively to Our Game Magazine. Rooney and some of his United and England teammates followed the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup. Center back Rio Ferdinand wished the team well via Twitter, and Rooney said he followed some of the matches as well. With attendance at most FAWSL matches up a bit following the World Cup, Rooney said he thinks it's only going to become bigger in a country that is so passionate about the men's game, but until recently hasn't really embraced the women's game.
"I think they (did) well at World Cup. It's unfortunate they lost, especially on penalties. Tough way to lose," Rooney said. "But I think it did a lot for women's football in England, and it will only get better."
In their first match back from the World Cup break, Arsenal vs. Liverpool drew just over 900 (third highest attendance in FAWSL this season), while the Everton vs. Chelsea match brought in slightly more than 500 (one of its best showings of 2011). This week, 963 showed up for the Bristol vs. Birmingham City game. That number was the second highest attendance this season. Will this trend continue? By the looks of it, yes. This weekend's figures showed even more promise.
